But be that as it may, let’s just be honest: all comic movies pretty much follow the same guideline/formula for success/failure. And as long as we’re willing to take out a small personal loan to go to our local theatres, Hollywood ain’t in no mood to change things.

There is nothing better to a comic book fan than when a book that you already love has an issue that rocks it’s ass off and has you freaking out at the end because you can’t wait for the next ish. This is one of those! Writer Dan Slott continues his awesome work on this Civil War spin-off and Stefano Caselli produces some of the slickest visuals, mixing an anime feel with your classic “Marvel” art style. This is part 2 of the storyline “Killed In Action” which has a horrific incident that happened in the first issue(s) come back and bite them in the ass big time! Just go and pick this and any issues you might have missed up. There is no Spider-man, Captain America or Hulk but with a killer creative team doing their best work, you don’t need big name superheroes. Grade: A+

Marvel Comics: Spider-Man – With Great Power… #1 ( of 5 )

Hey, don’t like the One More Day/Brand New Day bullsh*t going on in the regular Spidey book but still need your fix? Check this mini-series out by writer David Lapham and artist Tony Harris that gives us the origin of the wall crawler set in recent time and with more detail. This is worth a buy just for the gorgeous Tony Harris art and hey, Peter Parker doesn’t make any deals with the “devil” in this, unless it’s metaphorical. Grade: B+

Dynamite Entertainment: Project Superpowers #0

Zero issues are usually subpar as they are often filled with sketches and character bios, which might be cool but you really want a story. Well, this book delivers. Written by Alex Ross and Jim Krueger with art by Stephen Sadowski and Doug Klauba, this issue tells the story of a group of superheroes fighting the Axis powers during World War II. This story has been told before but hell, it’s always fun to see Nazis get what’s coming to them. The characters in this are a lot cooler than I thought they would be and have similarities to characters from Marvel and DC but are different enough to not be total ripoffs. Going by this issue alone I see epic storytelling before us and I’ll definitely be picking up issue 1 but I am discouraged that the art team on this issue isn’t listed for the next. Hopefully they have a good artist picked out because they definitely have a great idea here. Grade: A

Until next time–Peace….

Marvel Comics has done something with Spider-Man that has fans and creators all over shaking their heads and blurting out a collective “WHAT THE F#CK?!?”

In the recent storyline, One More Day, Aunt May lay near death due to a sniper’s bullet all stemming from the big event in Marvel’s mini-series, Civil War, in which Spider-Man unmasked to the public and showed that he was Peter Parker to show he was in support of the government’s Superhuman Registration Act. So, of course, Spider-Man’s enemies went after his loved ones which resulted in Aunt May’s condition. His unmasking caused a lot of strain on his marriage to Mary Jane as well. This could have led to some very interesting storylines had Marvel let it stand but instead, I’m guessing they felt that they had written themselves into a corner. So, how do they fix this? WITH FUCKING MAGIC!!! Yeah, that’s right. Spider-Man goes to the demon Mephisto and makes a deal and everything is reset….Aunt May is fine, nobody knows Peter Parker is Spider-Man, Mary Jane and Peter were never Married and he’s apparently younger.

WHAT THE FUCK?!? So Marvel says hocus f#cking pocus and retcon Spider-Man’s entire story continuity for the last twenty years. You know, I quit collecting Spider-Man over ten years ago because of the Clone Saga shit. A lot of the reason for that piece of crap storyline was Marvel trying to backpedal out of the Peter and MJ marriage and that Peter was no longer a teenager. Now, we get this fucked up storyline involving magical demon bullshit. Spider-Man is a great character and fans will stick through a lot of shit to read about Spidey’s exploits but Marvel needs to realize that, for the most part, teenagers are not reading these kind of comics now. Their fanbase has grown up with them and on average they are in their mid-20s and older. We like the fact that Spidey is an adult now. Don’t make him younger, just keep him young at heart!

So, the Justice League of America movie is officially on hold says Warner Bros. studio due to not getting the tax breaks needed to shoot in Australia and script issues that can’t be resolved at this time due to the screen writers strike.

I’m calling “BULLSHIT!” on that excuse. Just come out and say that the script fucking sucks, the director is totally off base for his idea for the flick and the actors that you’ve picked to play these iconic characters are B-movie actors at best. Anyway, we’ll be lucky to see this movie, if at all, in 2010.

Back to comics….DC Comics has a big event called Final Crisis in which they promise big changes in store for their universe of characters and a very high profile death. Check out the image below…

One of these characters is supposed to bite the big one. Who do you think it will be? My money is on Batman. Superman has already died and come back. Wonder Woman’s existence is magical in nature and linked with the Greek gods, therefore, they could just “will” her back to life. Three different Flashes have died, Barry Allen, Bart Allen and Wally West, with the latter returning to life. Green Lantern went insane, turned evil, died and was resurrected. Hawkman has a whole reincarnation thing tied in with his origin already and he wouldn’t provide enough of an emotional punch if he bit it. So, that leaves Batman. It sucks, I hate to see such a great character go but it would definitely leave ripples for years to come.

I have to mention Hellboy 2, the anticipated sequel based on the fantastic comic by Mike Mignola. Fan favorite director, Guilllermo del Toro, is directing this one as well and promises more action and an even bigger storyline than the first one. Speaking of big, check out this image of one of Hellboy’s guns from the film. And I thought he had a big one in the first flick!

In addition to my weekly comic book reviews I will try to bring any news or gossip relating to the world of comic books more often. Take care!
