This flick is a big golden vat of f#cking awesomeness!

This is the eighth trade paperback covering the chronicles of Hellboy and this one is one of the best.

The story is about Hellboy’s current sabbatical from the Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense in an effort to find out who he really is. So many evil doers, magical beings and the like keep telling Hellboy about his destiny of bringing about the apocalypse and he ain’t feeling that. While out on a walk near his friend Harry’s place the evil and powerful witch, Baba Yaga, sets into motion a series of events hoping to get revenge on Hellboy for the loss of her eye. This book is great! I wasn’t sure about it at first since Mike Mignola wasn’t doing the art. But he is writing and handed the art chores off to the very capable Duncan Fegredo who has a style reminiscent of Mignola in the best way. This one’s got witches, skeletal warriors, monsters and so much more. It’s hard to beat the story “Wake The Devil”, the second Hellboy mini-series, but this one gives it a run for it’s money. Grade: A+

Dark Horse Comics: B. P. R. D. – War On Frogs (one-shot)

This one-shot deals with the frog creatures (half frog/half man) that the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense has been dealing with for years. The frogs have been popping up all over the place and have been a huge problem since they are linked with bringing about the apocalypse. This book tells about the fate of the first frog creatures, The Cavendish Brothers, who first appeared way back in the first Hellboy mini, “Seed of Destruction”. John Arcudi writes and Herb Trimpe handles the pencils, the talents of both are great in my opinion but my be a bit quirky for the casual reader. One of my favorite B.P.R.D. members, Roger the Homunculus, is center stage in this tale which is on the plus side. On the bad, this book doesn’t have a lot of meat to it. I read it in about 5 minutes which is so unlike the other B.P.R.D. stuff. So for a quick read that delves even further into the mythology of the Hellboy universe, it’s not bad. Grade: B-

Dark Horse Comics: Hellboy – The Crooked Man #1 ( of 3 )

This is some good stuff! Written by Mike Mignola with art by Richard Corben, this one is about witchcraft and demons in the Appalachian Mountains of Virginia in 1958. Hellboy is investigating a magical attack on a young mountain woman when he gets caught up in a quest to get a man named Tom’s soul back from the backwoods demon named The Crooked Man. It’s creepy, the dialogue is wonderful and the art works very well for this story. This came out in stores last week so go snatch up a copy. Grade: A

And go see Hellboy II: The Golden Army….

In theaters July 11

The word is that it’s fan-freakin’-tastic and way better than the first one. More Hellboy, more monsters, more action, more comedy. GO!!!

This sweet poster by artist Drew Struzan was done for the New York Comic Con to promote Hellboy II: The Golden Army, which will be in theaters on July 11. A lot of people in the “fanboy” community have already seen the flick in it’s unpolished form and still say that it’s fantastic and a big improvement on the the very good first film. I’ve been looking forward to this one even more than Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk and The Dark Knight and hopefully it will haul in the dough so we’ll see a third. Never read the Hellboy comics? Do yourself a favor and do so….it’s one of the most unique and groundbreaking comics out there!

This is one of the flicks I’m most looking forward to this year and this cover is so iconic. Coming to theaters July 11, 2008.
