Quick question. What do you get when you combine Weezer, Queen, and Joan Jett all together in one song? Give up? Hit the link to find out.

What you would get is today’s first post of Music Mashups. What’s a mashup you ask? Well a mashup is when someone takes the vocal track from one song and places it over the music of another. Sometimes it works very well, sometimes not. The selection that I have chosen for you today works pretty well I think.

Watch the video, but more importantly enjoy the music.

Oh and by the way don’t forget to check out mynutts. From here on I’ll be posting most of my posts in both places.

When All Things East Inc. started earlier this year, I created a section called Artists You Should Know. The intention of this regular feature was to showcase musical artists that we thought that the general public needed to be aware of, or to feature music acts that we (the crew) had just heard about, and in an effort to seem cool we would tell the world about them on our little piece of the internet.

Well fast forward a few months and the section that I started for music was handed over to Chili Pepper Chris, and I could not be happier with what he’s done with it. He took the “Artist” part of the section and started showcasing artists, painters, sculptors and the like and I think he’s done a fantastic job with it, and so I’ve decided to leave the Artist You Should Know section as he has it now so that it will continue with “artists”.

Well that’s great naNye, but what about the music?

Fret not my minions, can I call you minions? The music is back with its own feature that will be aptly called: Music You Should Know. And to get us started back with a section intended to display the likes of those musically inclined, I can think of no other group to spotlight than that of the individual that got me involved in music to begin with – Soultron.

Soultron – or Dave as I will always call him, yes I know that his first name is Timothy and most people refer to him as Tim, but when we met as children he was Dave, when we played he was Dave, and as long as he and I live he will be Dave to me, cause that’s just how I roll.

Anyway, Soultron is an Indie / Break beat / Acoustic, musical entity now and after hearing some his new music, I absolutely love it especially his track “Gloria”.

When I met Dave as a kid back in the before time, the long, long ago, he was that nerdy, geeky kid that was shorter than me and so much cooler than me since he had discovered that you could customize action figures and toys by “painting” them thus completely blowing my immature mind. Dave, I mean Soultron was always ahead of his time and listening to his new sound I think other people can hear what I heard all those years ago when he started to teach me to play a bass guitar; this is someone who was blessed with great artistic talent, and was destined to do great things with it.

And now thanks to the fact that I’ve mastered this here internet thing, the rest of you can watch as two guys who at one time were convinced they could be a crime-fighting team of 13 year olds, start to dominate the third rock from the sun.

So I was talking to my first wife Chef the other day, and he was telling me that he had my next Bif Naked. I asked him what he meaned and he stated that he had found me; another little white girl with an amazing voice from across the pond for me to hear. That’s when I said…”oh really“. The little girl in question was Amy Winehouse.

Wikipedia says:

Winehouse was born to an English Jewish family with a history of jazz musicians.[2] She grew up in the suburb of Southgate, North London, and attended Ashmole School. At around the age of 10, Winehouse founded a short-lived amateur rap group called Sweet ‘n’ Sour, as Sour. She described the group as “the little white Jewish Salt ‘n’ Pepa”.[3] She attended the Sylvia Young Theatre School when she was 12 years old but was expelled at 13 for “not applying herself” and piercing her own nose.[4][3] She later attended the BRIT School in Selhurst, Croydon. She grew up listening to a diverse range of music (from Salt ‘n’ Pepa to Sarah Vaughan) and received her first guitar at 13.[5] Artists who have influenced her style include Nas, Mos Def, Teena Marie, Beastie Boys, Carole King, Mahalia Jackson, The Ronettes, The Shangri-las, The Shirelles, Sarah Vaughan, Minnie Ripperton, Dinah Washington, Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, The Specials, Toots and the Maytals and Thelonious Monk. After her friend, soul singer Tyler James, gave her demo tape to an A&R person, she was discovered and began singing professionally at age 16.[2] She signed to her current record label, Island/Universal, under management company 19 Management[3], Simon Fuller’s management company.

So per Chef’s suggestion, I bought her album “Back to Black”. In a word – Awesome This is exactly what I needed to hear. In a world still filled with the likes of non musically inclined female “artists” (*cough* Jessica, Britney, and the like *cough*) to hear this kind of music being made today just makes my day.

Moment of Weakness. That’s the first song I ever heard from Bif. I caught the video for it on one of those rare occasions back when MTV was actually still playing “music”. When I heard I remember thinking that this was the kind of music that I had been looking for. At the time it was a Limp Bizkit world and the radio was lit up with whatever rap/rock combination it could find. But after hearing Bif’s song, I rushed out to find her album – I Bificus. I Bificus is one of those rare albums for me where I go out and purchase it based off the strength of one track but come back loving every song on the disc.(I won’t even go into the Jewel fiasco I had when her first album came out…) Anyways, I could tell that Bif was an artist whose music I would be listening to for a while, and now thanks to the internet, you can find anything you want to about her.
According to those nice people over at Wikipedia;

Andy McKee (1979, in Topeka, Kansas) is an American acoustic guitarist currently signed to CANdYRAT Records. His unique style of playing and compositional talent has earned him a large fanbase; in late 2006, a live performance of his flagship song, “Drifting” became a Featured Video on YouTube, achieving over 3,400,000 views and peaking as the highest rated music clip on the site. In April of ‘07, another of McKee’s songs, “Rylynn”, overtook “Drifting” as the #1 rated English video of all time on YouTube, pushing the latter to #2.

So while looking around this weekend I came upon this video of Andy’s. And while at one time I fashioned myself to be a bit of a musician, I can honestly say that I could in no way, shape, or form come close to this guy. His skill is amazing and I can see why his video shot to the top of youtube.

Here’s the video for “Drifting”

and here’s the one that overtook Drifting, “Rylynn”

Dude what’s going on in the UK? The other day I was listening to my local morning radio show G105, and one of the DJ’s was doing his weekly top 5 must downloads. After playing several tracks by either people that I’d never heard of or really didn’t want to hear from again, he tells us about this chick over in the UK named Lola and her new song No Strings.

Well the other DJ’s seemed unimpressed with her song, that is until she started singing the hook; “..let’s have sex..no strings attached”

Yeah…all I can say is watch the vid and hit the link to be taken to her myspace page.
